Private nameservers - non-techie questions

Hi,

I'm a non-techie thinking of purchasing your reseller plan for my own use. I've used only shared hosting till date, so I'm quite ignorant of the basics of reseller hosting!

Have a couple of questions on private nameservers.

1. First off, it is necessary for me to set up my own nameservers? Or can I just use your nameservers for all my sites?

From what I read elsewhere, the only advantage private nameservers give a reseller is that your clients, if any, are transparent to the fact that you are a reseller. That is a non-issue in my case since I won't have any clients at all -- every site hosted will belong to me.

2. If I must set up my own nameservers -

a) Do I need to get a seperate domain for the nameservers? Or can I just use one of the several domains I'll be hosting on the reseller account?
b) Do I need to rent a separate server for setting up a nameserver on?
c) Is there a complex setup process involved?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,
Peter

It's not that different.

If you'd like to use our name servers, that's just fine. However, if you want to, you can provide us with your registrar login information and we'll set the private name servers up for you, free of charge.

Basically, there aren't any other major advantages, but it is nice to have your own name servers, and if you ever upgrade to a dedicated server, move to another server, etc., it's much easier to update everything.

A) You don't need an extra domain. Any domain you own will work.
B) Nope. It can be done with any reseller account we offer.
C) Not at all. Like I described above, we can do it for you if you want. If you want to do it yourself, it's not difficult at all.

Thanks again for your interest in Idologic. If you have any more questions, feel free to reply here or send us an email.

Hi Doug,

Thank you for your reply. That clarifies matters.

I plan to use a spare domain specifically for the purpose of setting up nameservers. This domain won't be developed, ie, there won't be a website associated with it. Will that arrangement work?

(Since some of the sites are in very competitive areas, I don't want someone tracing out one site by checking the nameserver info on another. Hence this arrangement.)

Also, does this domain have to be designated as the "main" domain on my reseller account? If yes, are there any other implications?

Once again, thanks in advance for yout time!

Best regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,

No problem. It's my pleasure to answer any questions you might have.

That's just fine. As long as the domain is registered, it will do the job.

No, the main domain is simply the one we give reseller permissions to. Generally, the main domain is the one associated with the name servers, but it's not required to be that way.

Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions by posting here or you can email us directly at sales@idologic.com.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Just a couple additional notes on top of all the good information from Doug.

1) Emailing sales@idologic.com will often get a bit faster response as it funnels into our Helpdesk software (more official and closely watched than the forums).

2) As far as private nameservers, Doug is right...it really makes moving your account between servers (as we upgrade servers) or from a reseller server to a dedicated server (if your accounts grow) MUCH easier. Basically we can transfer your files and then switch the IP #'s....so there's no virtually no downtime (since downtime during server switches is usually due to having to edit a lot of DNS zones and/or DNS propagation time).
